Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about UK postcodes.

  • How many postcodes are there in the UK?
The UK has approximately 1.7 million active postcodes for residential and business addresses. Royal Mail also maintains large-user postcodes for businesses and PO Box postcodes. postcodesmap.co.uk covers postcode areas derived from OpenStreetMap address data.
  • Can I look up a postcode by address?
Yes. The search on postcodesmap.co.uk accepts full addresses, street names, place names and area names. Using Nominatim geocoding, the address is resolved and matched to the correct postcode area.
  • What do the letters in a UK postcode mean?
A UK postcode has two parts. The outward code (e.g. SW1A) identifies the postcode area and district - the letters at the start indicate the postal town. The inward code (e.g. 2AA) narrows it to a specific delivery point. postcodesmap.co.uk lets you browse all postcodes for any outward code area.
  • How accurate are the postcode boundaries on the map?
The postcode boundaries shown are based on OpenStreetMap address data and show the approximate coverage of each delivery area. They are not Royal Mail's official boundaries. For legally authoritative postcode data contact Royal Mail.
  • Where does the data come from?
All geodata is from OpenStreetMap, a free mapping project with millions of contributors worldwide. Data is licensed under ODbL. Errors can be corrected directly on OpenStreetMap and will feed into future updates.
  • How do I find my nearest post office?
Search for your postcode or address in the search box. On the detail page for any postcode, you will find a "Post Offices" section listing all nearby locations with address, opening hours and map. You can also browse all locations at Post Offices.

About postcodesmap.co.uk - Free UK Postcode Map

postcodesmap.co.uk is a free service for searching and exploring UK postcodes. The centrepiece is the interactive postcode map, where all UK postcode areas can be explored directly - from a national overview down to individual delivery zones.

Unlike simple postcode directories, postcodesmap.co.uk shows not just which postcode an address belongs to, but also the spatial extent of the postcode area, neighbouring postcodes, administrative areas (community, district, county, nation) and the nearest post offices.

The search understands full addresses, street names, place names and areas - thanks to Nominatim geocoding, you do not need to know the postcode to find one.

All data is from OpenStreetMap, the world's largest free geodata project. Postcode areas are calculated from the distribution of over 30 million mapped addresses.

postcodesmap.co.uk is not an official source of Royal Mail data and makes no claim to the completeness or accuracy of the boundaries shown. For authoritative postcode information - for parcel delivery, address validation or geo-targeted marketing - we recommend the official products of Royal Mail.

Anyone who spots errors in the map data is welcome to correct them directly on OpenStreetMap - every improvement benefits all users.
